HSU Baseball splits with Mary Hardin-Baylor

ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' baseball team split an American Southwest Conference doubleheader with Mary Hardin-Baylor, dropping a heartbreaker 6-5 in the first game before winning 7-4 in the nightcap, on Saturday at Hunter Field.

Game 1

UMHB rallied to stun the Cowboys with four runs in the top of the seventh inning. K.J. Starks had the big blow a three-run home run to tie the game. Then Heath Spencer had his third two-out RBI of the game to give UMHB the 6-5 lead.

Zack Patino gave the Cowboys a 1-0 lead in the second with an RBI single. HSU freshman starter had held the Cru in check through the first five innings.

UMHB took a 2-1 lead in the sixth with a pair of runs on a Heath Spencer two-run two-out single.

The Cowboys responded with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-2 lead. Patino and Caleb Jacques each had two run singles for HSU.

Northrop took the loss to fall to 3-1 in his first career start. He ended up allowing six runs on 14 hits. Matt Rhodes got the final two outs for HSU.

Seth Barrow started for UMHB and allowed three runs on three hits in five and one-third innings. Nicholas Bergmann allowed two runs in relief of Barrow and then

Aaron Barteau came on and worked the final inning and one-third to record the win and improve to 4-0 out of the bullpen.

Patino led the Cowboys with two hits and drove in three runs. Will Stafford and Robert Loewe each had three hits for the Cru and Stark and Spencer had three RBIs each.

Game 2

HSU struck first in the second game as Jason Vause singled and stole second and then stole third and scored when the throw to third went into left field.

UMHB scored three times in the second inning. Will Stafford had an RBI single and Stark homered to left. He homered in all three games in the series.

HSU tied the game at three in the third inning. Marcus Uechi scored from second base on a wild pitch and Trey Thompson had an RBI single. Uechi had a two-run double in the fourth inning to make it 5-3 for the Cowboys and he had an RBI double in the fifth to make it 6-3.

HSU added a run in the eighth on a Brandon Walker RBI single to drive home Colson Craddick, who had tripled to lead off the inning. UMHB added a run in the ninth.

Uechi had three hits and drove in three runs for the Cowboys and four different UMHB batters had one hit each.

The Cowboys received a solid outing from a pair of freshmen as they combined on a four-hitter. Sam Hallen picked up the win to improve to 2-0. He allowed just three runs on four hits in six and two-third innings. Taylor Peables did not allow a hit and only an unearned run over the final two and one-third innings to record his first save. UMHB used four pitchers and J.D. Perkins took the loss in relief.

HSU is now 13-17 on the year and 9-15 in league play. UMHB is 20-10 overall and 15-9 in conference play. HSU plays at Ozarks next weekend.
