Sexual assault charges against city of Abilene interpreter dropped

Sexual assualt charges dropped on Abilene man

ABILENE, Texas - Sexual assault charges against a former Swahili interpreter for the city of Abilene have been dropped.

Aloys Nzeyimana was arrested in 2010 for indecency with a child, sexual assault, and burglary of a habitation.

Nzeyimana was working as a translator for the city of Abilene when he was arrested.

Nzeymana's attorney Ken Leggett said police and prosecutor Dan Joiner had trouble talking to Nzeyimana's alleged victims who are mostly African refugees.

According to Leggett, the refugees don't trust the American criminal justice system because of their experience with the system in Africa.

Leggett also said a few of the refugees have recanted their stories. Because of that, Joiner told the judge he did not have enough evidence to move forward with the charges.
