ABILENE, Texas - Three civic minded Wylie ISD students would like to bring curbside recycling to Abilene.
Annaclaire Boone, Kaylee Beard, and Mattie Smith started a petition as a simple school Earth Day project. To date, they have received 1, 124 signatures hard copy and online. On Thursday, the girls are going before the Abilene City Council to present their proposal.
"I'm really excited," Annaclaire Boone said. "I didn't think it was going to go this far."
On Monday, the girls discussed the pieces of their proposal. The presentation on Thursday for city leaders will not be the first time, the city has heard this type of appeal.
"Historically it's been not really been pursued primarily because of cost and really a lack of enthusiasm for participation by the community, but that may have changed now," Abilene City Manager Larry Gilley.
However, the girls think this approach will work.
"People have been saying, 'I don't recycle because I don't want to sort everything out and drive all the way to the center, and then put it in all the different containers, but if we had recycling trucks, I would definitely recycle,' Mattie Smith said.
Regardless of the outcome, the girls said they've learned a lot from their civic experience.
"We are sixth graders and we can do it and we are important to the world and our community," Kaylee Beard said.
The cost for curbside recycling vary. Recycling is not free, but the cost to citizens would depend on the type of service the city would offer.
At least two cities in Texas provide curbside recycling. In El Paso items are collected and taken to a private business. The business sells the items for profit. There is no charge to residents. In Austin, residents are charged $13.35 per month for a 24 gallon container and up to $33.50 for a 96 gallon container.
