Three young men were arrested by the Taylor County Sheriff's Department on aggravated robbery charges on Sunday evening after allegedly threatening an elderly couple at gunpoint.

Police have identified the pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle and killed late Monday night on South 1st Street.

An 18-wheeler hauling concrete drove off a bridge near Elmdale Road, coming to rest on 1-20 east of Abilene.

Suffering from an unknown medical condition, the driver lost control of the vehicle and headed off the bridge, sailing through the air, before going down the embankment and coming to rest on 1-20. Traffic was diverted onto the access road while the accident was cleaned up. The driver was taken to an Abilene hospital.

Martha Kiel "Bit" Whitaker, a 58-year-old former Child Protective Services regional director, was charged during July 2014 with tampering with physical evidence in connection with her agency's alleged mishandling of a highly publicized 2012 Klapheke child death case. Whitaker was a CPS regional director when 22-month-old Tamryn Klapheke died from severe neglect in August 2012. Tamryn's mother, Tiffany, in February was sentenced to 30 years in prison for her role.
