ACU defense continues to make huge strides going into Nicholls St.

ACU defense continuing to improve off...

ABILENE, Texas - In a defensive slug fest against ranked McNeese State on Saturday, ACU football didn't come out on the winning end, but boy what a big improvement from last season from the defense.

That group eliminated what could have been a much bigger deficit in Saturday’s ten point loss, making some big 3rd down stops and goal line stands against the Cowboys, who came in ranked No. 22 in the national polls for FCS.

That defensive performance, highlighting an area the Wildcats have come a long way in, having finished last in the Southland Conference, and second to last in the country in defense a year ago.

“What those men have been able to do, and obviously we've been able to flip our roster a little bit with some drop down guys -- I mean that's unbelievable,” said head coach Adam Dorrel at Wednesday’s press conference. “Obviously we still have plenty of football to be played, but they’re playing with passion – it’s great.”

But now, their confidence builds with another shot at a ranked opponent as ACU visits Nicholls for the first time on Saturday.

“I think there's a lot of confidence that we can gain from knowing we can play with a group like that [McNeese] and hopefully what it does is that it inspires your players to work harder," said Dorrel.

ACU and Nicholls St. will get underway on Saturday at 3 p.m.
