Amateur Abilene radio operators demonstrate emergency capabilities in Hamby
Tornadoes, fires and storms can leave entire regions dark with no way to communicate or get important safety information.
In case of those emergencies amateur radio operators, or "hams," are able to help out.
"Abilene hams" joined thousands of other operators this weekend to show off their emergency capabilities.
The annual event gives the public a chance to see the operators set up emergency stations in parks, shopping malls, schools and backyards across the country.
The "Key City Amateur Radio Club" held demonstrations Saturday at the Hamby Volunteer Fire Department.
The slogan for ham operators is "when all else fails, ham radio works."
More than 35-thousand hams across the country are participating in the event.
