Big Country residents clean out their medicine cabinets

ABILENE, Texas - Abilene's Texas Tech School of Pharmacy is doing their part to keep prescription medications out of the wrong hands.

The school turned their parking lot into a drop-off center for people with unused and expired medication.

What was the reason for the medication drop off?

"Our smaller children will get into our medicine cabinets or in our medicine bottles," said Dr. Jeanie Jaramillo director of the poison center for the school of pharmacy. "As kids get older they like to experiment and they believe pharmaceutical products are safe to experiment with."

School of Pharmacy officials also want to make sure medications are disposed of the right way.

"We want them properly disposed of," Said Jaramillo. "When they bring them to us, we have them incinerated. So that they don't get into the environment like they would if they were flushed."

The pharmacy school holds the clean out in the spring and fall.

According to the Centers for disease Control and prevention, prescribed drugs abuse is the fastest growing drug problem in the United States.
