Anson vigil held for 12-year-old shooting victim

ANSON, Texas - Residents in Anson are doing what they can to pull together during a difficult time. Friends, family and members of the community showed up at Tiger Stadium in Anson on Thursday to pray for 12-year-old Zachary Fernandez who was shot in the head Monday afternoon.

Zachary was a passenger in a car that was shot at during what Abilene police said was a drug deal gone wrong. He was airlifted to Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth in critical condition. Police arrested the alleged shooter -- 21-year-old Christopher Mack -- in connection with the shooting.

Zachary's family members said they never expected something like this to happen in the small town of Anson

"There's a whole bunch of people here that really care for him and you know it's hard. He's 12 years old," said Michael Chance Galvan, Zachary's cousin.

"It hits really close to home it has affected everybody the kids, the parents, you know it has affected everybody," said Isabell Hernandez, another cousin of Zachary's.

Galvan said if anyone can pull through such a traumatic injury, it is  Zachary.

"He has more fight in him than anybody I've ever met," said Galvan.

"He's always had a smile on his face. He's one of those kids that make your day better just by seeing him," he said.

After the crowd of more than 100 people were done praying, his football teammates released balloons in Zachary's honor.

"If he was here right now I would tell him that he needed to get better and I loved him and you know to get ready for football," said football teammate Cory Booker.
