Four-year starter Stokes ready to put knowledge to the test for Bearcats

Senior has been QB1 since freshman year

Stokes ready for his 4th and final...

HAWLEY, Texas - Time flies by, and for Hawley senior Quay Stokes, the 2017 season will mark his last in the Bearcat uniform. But he's certainly not satisfied yet.

Friday afternoon, the pads were popping for Hawley, as the program prepares to respond following a much earlier than anticipated exit in the postseason.

QB1 Stokes knows all too well about responding and learning from the previous season. The young man has been Hawley's starter since he was a freshman. Now four years of being in the varsity system, its almost night and day from when he began.

"I couldn't have gotten any worse than when I first started,” Stokes said at Friday’s practice. “There was only one way and that was up.”

Now three years later, Stokes has amassed quite the resume. Entering the 2017 season, the QB is not far away from the 10,000 career rush/pass yardage mark to go along with 125 career touchdowns. Impressive to say the least.

“I didn’t think really much about it, but that’s not something I really look into,” he said. “My main goal is to be a leader on this team and do my best to put my team in position to win. If it happens, great. If not, great. I’m just glad I get to play football as a Hawley Bearcat.”

He’s grown up before our very eyes, and with a solid group behind him, Stokes’ maturity is set to shine this season.

“Ever since my freshman year I've always tried to come in everyday and work as hard as I can and get ready for another day," he said.

Senior Dylan Frazier added, “He's just a really good leader. Like he knows what to do and he always gets us in control."

Mitch Ables has coached Quay for the last four seasons, and now, not only knows his athletic ability, but his football IQ has the program impressed.

“It's like having another coach on the field,” smiled coach Ables. “He's been here for four years and he's just as good of a coach as we are right now."
