UPDATED: Dyess airmen, contract employee arrested for recklessly shooting in Jones County

HAWLEY, Texas - Eight men, including seven active-duty airmen and one contracted employee of Dyess Air Force Base, were arrested over the weekend on charges of deadly conduct for recklessly firing semi-automatic weapons in the direction of a home and a vehicle in Jones County.

In addition to contract worker Jonathan Gasdick, airmen Joshua Sondag, Joshua Moser, Terry Fesler, Brett Mackenzie, Ryan Sather, Joshua Calton and Johnathan Boone were among those charged.

Sondag is also charged with possession of a prohibited weapon, meaning having a gun barrel too short by state law.

The charges are third-degree felonies.

Around 9 p.m. Saturday, neighbors in Hawley – about 14 miles north of Abilene – called 911 after hearing gunfire. Deputies responded to a private home near County Road 418 and Highway 277, Jones County deputies said.

A woman told authorities several bullets struck her home and damaged her car.

Sheriff's deputies saw a broken mirror on the woman's car and determined the damage had just happened and was caused by a projectile of some type.

Sunday afternoon, the landowner where the shots were fired told KTXS News the men are military members, who were firing off their ammunition, after hunting hogs.

Each of the men are out of jail after posting $7,500 bond.

Dyess  personnel are assisting as needed in the ongoing investigation, a spokeswoman said.

"We are always looking out for the best interest of our airmen, but we do hold them accountable for their actions. It is important to note that the accused are innocent until proven guilty. If service members are found in violation of military or civilian law appropriate action will be taken to ensure justice," said Col. Glen VanHerck, 7th Bomb Wing commander.

The Jones County Sheriff's Office was joined by the Department of Public Safety, the Anson and Hawley Police Departments, and the State Game Warden's Office in making the arrests.
