Brownwood City Council opens last public hearing for tax rate hike

BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Brownwood City Council will vote next week on a tax rate hike, it's first in 18 years, after holding its second public hearing Tuesday.

The hearing was held inside Brownwood City Hall and it was for a proposed tax rate of $.7946 per $100 valuation.

Under state law, two hearings are required for a proposed property tax rate exceeding the effective tax rate.

If council members pass the new tax rate hike, a home valued at $100,000 will be paying $790 in property taxes.

The proposed tax rate hike will be adopted at 9 a.m. September 19 on first reading. Second and third readings will take place on September 26.

Council members also approved a contract on Tuesday between the Brownwood Fire Department and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

It will allow Brownwood firefighters to participate in wildfire training exercises, including prescribed burns done by state agencies.
