BROWNWOOD, Texas -

This weekend marks the 50th anniversary of the Brownwood Coliseum, and also 50 years since Howard Payne University (HPU) started playing basketball games there.

There will be a special ceremony in between the women's and men's basketball games this Saturday. The first game starts at 1 p.m.

HPU sports information director Abram Choate said he has sentimental ties to the Coliseum.

"I do have some fond memories as a student and as a student athlete," Choate said. "I actually played basketball for Howard Payne myself and played in this facility."

From car shows to college graduations to business showcases, many events have been held at the Brownwood Coliseum.

Parks and Recreation director David Withers, who oversees the Coliseum, said such events help draw a big crowd into the city.

Choate said the celebration will also highlight Hall of Famer Dallas Huston, who has been broadcasting HPU's games at the Coliseum for 50 years.

According to Withers, the Brownwood Coliseum was built as a dome first. Construction workers then "used jacks to raise the dome up and then they built everything underneath it." Withers said the dome building can seat about 4,000 people. "With the size of our community, that's pretty impressive."
