Brown County boys remembered for positive spirits and personalities

BROWNWOOD, Texas - People in Brown County are still grieving and shocked over the death of two teenagers.

Billy Edward Jones, 18, and Bolton Layne Day, 19, lost their lives Sunday after a car crash on Highway 67 near Ballinger in Runnels County.

Brownwood High School Assistant Principal Mitch Moore said the campus won't be the same without Jones, who was a senior at the school.

"He's going to be missed around the school," Moore said. "He'll be missed in his classes and I know his friends are going to miss him. You're going to know he's missing in the hallways."

Moore said Jones always had a smile on his face.

"He'd make others smile too," Jones said. "He was the kind of guy who kept things light and was fun to be around."

Moore said the school will be ready to provide services after spring break to help students cope with the loss of their classmate.

"Whatever they need, we're going to make sure we take care of our students because it's going to be a hard few months," Moore said. "It's not going to end in a few weeks. We're going to keep his memory alive and honor him."

Day, a Zephyr High School graduate, was driving the vehicle and also lost his life.

Cody Rogers, owner of the Diamond R Cafe, said Day graduated with his son and would always come by his restaurant to eat.

"I can't think of one thing about Bolton that anybody would've said bad about the boy," Rogers said. "He's always happy-go-lucky and never really caused any issues at all anywhere.

"Bolton's a very well-respected and well-mannered, easy-going kid. He was always laughing and just very polite."

Meanwhile, Moore said: "It's such a tragedy to lose your child. Usually we think of our parents passing away before us. My prayers go out to their families."

According to the obituary in the Brownwood Bulletin, funeral services for Day will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Abundant Life Church. Day will be buried at Eastlawn Memorial Park. No word yet on when funeral services will be held for Jones.
