BROWNWOOD, Texas - If you're looking to open a small business, Brownwood may be worth considering.
That's the word form the Chamber of Commerce.
According to the city of Brownwood, more small businesses opened up last year than in 2011, and the positive trend is expected to continue into 2013.
A restaurant is opening Saturday, April 6. Mi Sueno's grand opening is from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. in the Budget Inn and Suites parking lot. There will be free hot dogs and treat bags for kids, samples of the food, and food to purchase.
For years, it has been Jesusa Perez's dream to open a restaurant of her own, and this year she has transformed that dream into Mi Sueno.
"Well, it wasn't really an idea, it was a dream or a vision that God gave me years ago, and that's how it came to be called Mi Sueno. Mi Sueno interpreted in English means, "my dream," said Perez.
Mi Sueno is located inside of The Budget Inn and Suites.
The restaurant opened in a matter of three months, after the family sought advice from the Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce.
"All the things that you take into consideration when opening up a business, you know, is this the correct area, and am I going to get a lot of traffic?" said Perez.
Director of Business Development and Marketing Ray Tipton with the Chamber, said now is a good time to start a business in Brownwood.
"We have some resources in place to help small business owners get started. Here at the Chamber of Commerce, we offer small business consultations and a small business start up guide," said Tipton.
In fact, the city issued 23 certificates of occupancy in 2011 and 27 in 2012, meaning 27 new businesses opened in Brownwood last year.
Along with the 27 new businesses that opened last year, 91 sales tax permits were granted by the State Comptroller's Office to individuals with a Brownwood address.
These are businesses located inside of a home, and wouldn't need a certificate of occupancy from the city.
