Brownwood ISD conducting safety protocol review

BISD safety sweep underway

BROWNWOOD, Texas - Brownwood ISD is having a two-week safety and protocol review on each of its campuses.

In the wake of the Sand Hook Elementary tragedy, district officials thought it would be smart to get everyone, including outside agencies, on the same page when it comes to safety.

The district is trying to be more proactive.

"Anything that we can do to help improve safety is something we need to be doing," said Fred Bastardo Resource Officer at Brownwood High School.

"On each of the campuses there has to be crisis management teams, basically those particular teams, which the counselors and the nurses are a part of, they specifically deal with the campus safety," said Bastardo.

This week Bastardo has been conducting meetings with counselors.

"There's no protocol in place right now for the influx to come in. Who do they contact? What do they need to do? We need to have an established protocol to deal with that," said Bastardo.

Next week Bastardo will review procedures with outside agencies.

"Let's say the fire department or the police department come in, they're looking for a specific deal that everyone's doing the same thing all across the district," said Bastardo.

This is the first time the district has conducted a safety protocol of this nature.

Resource Officer Fred Bastardo and the administration will bring the results of the safety review to the school board after the safety review is finished.

Brownwood ISD provides a way to receive alerts about upcoming events, drills, and actual emergencies. There is also a Brownwood ISD mobile app for smart phones that will send alerts if an emergency occurs. Go to for information.
