Three stabbed during argument over loud music in Brownwood

Brownwood woman charged with stabbing three over loud music

BROWNWOOD, Texas - A 37-year-old Brownwood woman was arrested late Tuesday after allegedly stabbing three people during an argument over loud music.

Shanetha Brooks is booked in Brown County Jail on three charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after police said she stabbed two women and a man.

The incident occurred about 10 p.m. Tuesday at Driftwood Apartments.

Brownwood officers were dispatched to 501 Main St. after receiving a call of a disturbance and possible stabbing.

Upon arrival, officers identified two female victims, ages 30 and 50, in an apartment with stab wounds.

While officers were interviewing the victims, officers learned that the disturbance originated over a loud music complaint.

Officers learned the identity of Brooks and were able to meet with her. While officers were speaking with Brooks, a 35-year-old male approached the officers and it was determined that he was also a victim of the assault.

The male victim was stabbed while attempting to break up the fight.

The three victims were transported by Guardian Ambulance Service to Brownwood Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, said Assistant Police Chief James Fuller. Fuller said the injuries consisted of "some cuts and punctures, but nothing life threatening, too deep."

Fuller said the victims were treated at the hospital, but was unable to confirm if anyone had to stay or if all were treated and released.

Amber Slaughter is one of the three victims allegedly stabbed repeatedly by Brooks.

Slaughter said Brooks was not a resident of Driftwood Apartments, but she was visiting a tenant who lives next door to Slaughter.

Slaughter said the altercation all started with a noise complaint.

"I just got through finished cooking, in there laying down, and all you could hear through the walls, boom, boom, boom, loud music," said Slaughter.

When Slaughter asked to turn the music down, Brooks turned violent.

"Next thing I know, I heard the gentleman say, 'Oh she stabbed me, she stabbed me!' I turn around, about that time she was coming toward me with a knife," said Slaughter.

Slaughter said she's lucky to be alive.

"If I wouldn't have went like this with my arm, she would've got me all in my chest, you know my heart is right here," said Slaughter.

Brooks is charger with stabbing Amber Slaughter's mother and another man as well.

Bernard Crowder is a resident at Driftwood Apartments and said the liquor store next door to the apartments makes matters worse.

"It's a drinking problem over here, that's the problem here. People like to drink and they don't know how to control themselves," said Crowder.
