EARLY, Texas - A 45-year-old Early man is in critical condition after sustaining a gunshot wound to the stomach Monday evening, the result of an apparent domestic dispute, police said.
It happened in the 200 block of Crescent Drive around 5:30 p.m.
Early Chief of Police David Mercer said authorities found Nelson Thomas, 45, lying on the front porch, bleeding profusely with the gunshot wound. He is currently being treated at the John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth.
Thomas's wife, Micah Thomas, was taken to the hospital in Brownwood to be treated for anxiety and assault wounds. Chief Mercer confirmed that Micah shot her husband.
"We'd learned that apparently there had been some family violence that led to the shooting incident," Chief Mercer said. "It's sad when a situation in a family reaches this point."
Micah has been released from the hospital and questioned by the police. Chief Mercer said the shooting appears to be an act of self defense but they are gathering facts before filing any charges. He also said he is waiting to question the male victim, Nelson Thomas.
23-year-old neighbor Alyshia Winstead was the person who called 911.
"A lady ran out of her house with nothing on but her panties and a shirt...She was pretty beat up," Winstead said. "I offered her clothes and assistance as much as I could until the ambulance got here."
Winstead said Micah told her the man had pepper sprayed her and continued to beat her, and that she shot him at point blank with a 20-gauge shotgun.
"My grandma had informed me that she had heard people crying in the night before so we're guessing that this had been going on for awhile," Winstead said.
Early police officers and Department of Public Safety troopers handled the case.
No one has been charged, and no one is in custody.
