It was a packed house at The Mill Winery in Abilene for an event that combined fashion and the fight against cancer: The Cattle Baron's Ball Style Show.
Andrea Wilson was a model Thursday morning but she's something much more than that. "I'm a cancer survivor. I did a month of chemo and radiation then I had surgery and I have a permanent colostomy bag. I wanted to do it because this is part of my bucket list was to be a runway model," said Wilson.
Sunne Schakke also a model at the style show, wears a few hats herself. "I am a fiscal manager at Headstart. I'm a mom," said Schakke.
She is also a cancer survivor.
"I have rhabdomyolysis sarcoma in my abdomen and liver and I have been cancer free for five months," said Schakke.
Both Andrea and Sunne walked the runway to show others the fight against cancer is something we're all in together.
"I know it's hard to not know the right words to say and sometimes there are no words to say. But just to know that someone's there with you through the fire it helps a lot," said Wilson.
"It's just amazing to see how many people are out there caring about what's going on and trying to raise money so we can eventually kick it," said Schakke.
Amy Carnes with the American Cancer Society says this style show along with the Cattle Baron's Ball will raise more than $130,000 this year alone.
"It's a major fundraiser to help fund cancer research, advocacy and local patient services patients here in the Big Country," said Carnes. But that's not the only thing this event was about. "Of course with having all of our survivor models here today, it's just about celebrating them in their survivorship. Cancer has affected so many people.
Here's a message, from someone who knows, for all those out there who have been affected:
"Don't ever lose hope. There so many things out there. They've made so much progress in the research, there are so many treatments out there that make treatment easier. Don't lose hope. You just always keep fighting," said Schakke.
