Man arrested after evading, assaulting Coleman officer

COLEMAN, Texas - A 23-year-old man is in custody after leading Coleman police on a chase around the city and then assaulting an officer while handcuffed.

Kody Shane Keaster was arrested early Saturday morning and taken to the Coleman City Jail, according to a press release. He faces several charges, including evading police, assault of a public servant and possession of less than two ounces of marijuana.

A news release states police tried initiating the stop of a 1996 Chevrolet Blazer at the intersection of Walnut and Neches Streets after Keaster committed a traffic violation.

He ignored the officer’s attempt and continued driving until he pulled into a residential driveway, according to police.

They said Keaster “resisted the officer’s arrest and assaulted the police officer.” The officer also observed “numerous 9mm bullets falling onto the ground” from Keaster’s shorts while he was being secured.

When officers searched Keaster's vehicle, they reportedly found a fully loaded 9mm handgun under his car seat and 6.5 grams of marijuana.

Keaster was also cited by police for driving without a license and the unlawful possession of a firearm as a convicted felon.

He’s in the Coleman County Jail on bonds totaling $39,000, according to police.
