COLORADO CITY, Texas - A highly regarded Colorado City veterinarian was one of two people seriously injured Monday morning in a two-vehicle crash on Hwy 70, one mile south of Sweetwater.

Friends of Justin Goebel, his wife and his young child have established a crowdfunding page with a goal of raising $50,000. They had raised more than $9,000 as of early Tuesday afternoon.

Goebel remained hospitalized Tuesday at University Medical Center in Lubbock.

“[Goebel's] the type of guy you can call on no matter what,” #TeamGoebel says on the Goebels’ crowdfunding page.

“If your cow is sick, your sheep need tending to, he’s the guy to call. If your dog broke a leg, swallowed a ball, ate the trash, just give them a call. Ran out of gas, flat tire, or need a helping hand, the Goebels would be there to help. People like that.

“They are a rare breed these days and hard to find.”

The accident occurred about 7:30 a.m. Monday on a bridge crossing an icy creek on Hwy 70 just outside Sweetwater, a Sweetwater Fire Department spokesman said Tuesday.

Two Chevy trucks, including one driven by Justin Goebel, collided in the middle of the road, the spokesman said.

The accident was so severe that it took 20 minutes for the two drivers to be removed from their vehicles. The highway had to be shut down for nearly an hour after the crash.

The identity of the second driver wasn’t immediately released by authorities.

Meanwhile, the Goebels’ friends are continuing to try to raise money to aid the family.

“Let’s take this moment to help them in their time of need,” #TeamGoebel said on the crowdfunding page. “Let’s help ease their burden the best we can. They are going to need all the help, love, prayers, and support they can get during this time.

KTXS will provide additional details as they become available.
