ABILENE, Texas -

Hardin-Simmons’ women’s soccer team has been picked to win its 12th straight American Southwest Conference in a vote of the league’s 10 head coaches and sports information directors.

The Cowgirls return four starters from a year ago and will be an entirely different looking team.

“It is almost like it is a new era for the Cowgirls, we lost so many great players,” said Marcus Wood. “There is no doubt UT-Tyler and UT Dallas both return a lot of their better players. So it is going to be an interesting season.

“We have an experienced senior group, but our freshmen, sophomores and juniors haven’t played a lot. It is a good thing conference play doesn’t start until later, because we are going to need some time to get all of the pieces in the right spot. We are looking forward to the challenge.”

Seniors Katie Haltiwanger and Julianne Kucera have been named preseason offensive and defensive players of the year in the conference. Kucera was the ASC offensive player of the year last season with 15 goals. Haltiwanger is making the move to the back to anchor a defensive backline that lost a pair of All-Americans.

Sophomore midfielder Peyton Janssen, joined Haltiwanger and Kucera on the preseason watch list.

Texas-Tyler was picked second, last season’s runner-up Texas Dallas was picked third, Mary Hardin-Baylor is fourth, East Texas Baptist fifth and Concordia was picked sixth. Howard Payne, Louisiana College, LeTourneau and Ozarks rounded out the poll.

HSU opens the season on Aug. 30 against St. Scholastica in San Antonio at 7 p.m.
