Dyess C-130 pilot battles for his life
A Dyess AFB C-130 pilot was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year and it's taken him off the flight line for a while.
This isn't the first time the Yardley family has done battle with the disease.
They thought radiation took it away last year, but now that it's back and has turned their lives upside down.
Capt. Jason Yardley, 36, was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma, a type of oral cancer that's affected his tongue.
"For the first two weeks when he was telling me that it wasn't good and everything. I did cry nonstop and it was hard for the children," said Heather Yardley, Jason's wife.
Yardley said his biggest fear is not being able to take care of his family.
"I plan on being around to see my boys grow up, to watch them, you know, do all the things that a father needs to do for his sons. So I plan on doing that, but I want to be able to provide for them. So that's, for me, the scariest thing," Yardley said.
"My dad died when I was two," said Heather. "So I know how it is to live without a dad. I was a little girl...I just can't imagine...my boys are strong, but still."
Right now, the prognosis looks good.
But the treatment process was a struggle, both emotionally and financially.
"It's amazing how I don't care about the little things anymore and how I realize that the special moments you have together, how much they really mean," Heather said.
The Yardley's said they'll know about the cancer's progression sometime in July, after more scans and biopsies are done.
A Fun Run fundraiser is scheduled for this Saturday, May 18 at the Wylie Junior High School track.
Registration is from 7 a.m. - 10 a.m. To pre-register, click here.
The cost is $20 per person or you can pay $25 and also receive a Team Yardley t-shirt.
Events will be a 10K, 5K, and 1K run, although you don't have to run in any of the events. You can just show your support by being there.
All money raised at the event will go to the family to help with things like treatment travel costs.
