First responders who have lost their lives in the line of duty were honored with two ceremonies Wednesday.
The first took place at the Abilene Law Enforcement Center where families were honored with bag pipes, a flag raise, gun salute and a wreath presentation.
"Today is about recognizing the sacrifices done by first responders both in the community and across the nation," Abilene Police Chief Stan Standridge said.
The second ceremony was a memorial service titled "Their Duty Was to Serve, Our Duty is to Remember." It took place in the Logsdon Chapel at Hardin-Simmons University.
The events lead up to "National Police Week" that will take place from May 11 to May 17.
Several local Abilene officers are making the trip to Washington to honor all of those who have died serving their communities.
