The Abilene High- Cooper Crosstown Showdown is this Friday and tickets went on sale Monday. Tickets for the AHS side of the stadium were sold on the east side and Cooper tickets were on the west.
Die hard Abilene High fan Yolanda Lopez got in line at Shotwell Stadium at 7 a.m. Monday morning.
"We always want to be the first ones," said Lopez.
As soon as Lopez took her spot in line the Cooper-Abilene competition began.
"We always beat the people on the Cooper side. Cooper never gets out here earlier than us. I don't think they want to come sit out here at 3:30 in the morning," Lopez said.
It wasn't long before the Cooper Cougars fans outnumbered Abilene High Eagles fans. Dorothy Grimm and her sister Jerry Mashburn were among the first Cougars to get a place in line.
"We got here at eight, a little after eight,” said Grimm.
“We didn't get here at eight though,” Mashburn disagreed.
“Excuse me you are going to have to talk to my sister she'll correct me on everything I say," said Grimm.
People waited up to 10 hours to get their first pick at seats.
For some the rivalry isn't just cross-town it's cross-family.
“I will be sitting with them on the cooper side wearing my Abilene high shirt," one fan said.
Mashburn was an Eagle when she was in high school.
"That was in the dinosaur days. It was in 1952, that's when I graduated," Mashburn said.
Now, Mashburn cheers for the other team.
"My children graduated from Cooper so that's my team now and that's the team that's going to be winning," said Mashburn.
"Cooper's going to be the good team they're going to state this year," Grimm added.
Of course Abilene High fans disagree. Who do they think will take the game this year?
"Eagles,” said Lopez.
The Crosstown Showdown will take place Friday at Shotwell Stadium. Cooper will be the home team.
