'Flame of Hope' caravan to stop Wednesday in Abilene
From Taylor County Sheriff's Office spokesman John Cummins:
Law enforcement officers and other first responders from as far away as El Paso will stopover in Abilene this Wednesday, as they carry the "Flame of Hope" to this summer's Special Olympics in Arlington.
The caravan – representing the U.S. Marshal's Service, Odessa police and fire, Ector County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Department of Criminal Justice and the Texas Department of Public Safety and El Paso first responders, will arrive at about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Nolan/Taylor County line on Interstate 20.
From there Taylor County Sheriff’s County officers will escort them to the Special Olympics event in Red Bud Park.
The El Paso first responders actually have runners covering every mile of the distance from their city to Arlington. Each runner usually averages a total of at least 16 miles during the trip.
