ABILENE, Texas -

Women who needed basic check-ups were welcome to the open clinic Saturday morning at the Abilene-Taylor County Public Health District.

Women within a certain income bracket could receive diabetes screenings, basic health and weight checks, and high blood pressure screenings.

One of the organizers of the event said it's important for women to look after themselves.

"Unfortunately there are many women that go without receiving care for their health and a lot of times we care for everyone else, we tend to forget about ourselves," Turquoise Pipes, outreach worker, said.

Sandra Chavarria, a patient at the day's clinic, said she appreciated the help and information she received.

"It has been hard to go to the doctor especially when you're not sure what the expenses are gonna be," Chavarria said. "You don't have the income to do it, so this has been a very, very wonderful opportunity."

The clinic ended at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
