ABILENE, Texas - We are tracking very cold arctic air moving south into our region Wednesday evening. Below freezing temperatures are forecast for the Big County by sunrise Thursday. Below freezing temperatures are expected to continue at least into Sunday.
Low temperatures are forecast to be around 20 Friday morning and around 10 Saturday morning. Look for readings in the teens Sunday morning. Protect your pipes, pets and people.
Cover your exposed pipes and faucets. Consider opening your cabinet doors to allow heated air to circulate around the water pipes of plumbing that is on outside walls. You can also let the water drip from the faucet if you are really concerned about your pipes freezing.
Make sure your outdoor pets have a dry shelter that hopefully blocks the cold north wind. Provide them with drinkable water - liquid not ice.
Make sure are you are covering up. Wear gloves, and cover your head. Dress in several layers of clothes if you have to be outside.
In addition to the cold, we are forecasting light rain to move into our region Thursday. This will quickly become freezing rain - especially in the Big Country before Thursday afternoon. Bridges and overpasses could become icy before the end of the day Thursday.
A heavier batch of freezing rain or sleet is forecast to move through our region Thursday night. This should be the major precipitation event for our area. Surface roads could become icy Thursday night.
Up to one half of an inch of sleet or snow is possible Thursday night / Friday morning. One tenth to 1/4 of an inch of ice will be possible as well. This would make travel difficult by Friday morning.
As temperatures stay in the freezer, the road conditions that we start the day with Friday should not really improve much through Sunday morning.
Light amounts of freezing rain or sleet will be possible again Saturday. Dry weather is forecast for Sunday into midweek.
