One north Abilene neighborhood celebrated Independence Day Thursday with its 17th annual parade.
THe Hillcrest Neighborhood Parade began at 10 a.m. on Campus Court and wrapped up wt the Hillcrest Church of Christ. Local first responders also participated in the parade.
Organizers said they are proud to see how much the parade has grown over the years.
"We started the parade 17 years ago just as a community effort, [a] way to give our kids a chance to celebrate the country's birthday and we had about 50 the first year and now it's grown, we probably will have 450 in the parade this year as well as that many on the side," Liz Rotenberry, a committee member, said. "It's a real grassroots effort to celebrate the country's birthday."
Rotenberry said an estimated 1,000 people particpated and watched the parade in 2012.
