Hotel proposals, Abilene Civic Center name change set for council meeting

ABILENE, Texas - Proposals for a downtown hotel are set for discussion at Abilene City Council this week.

In mid-November, the city received four responses from a request for proposals to develop a downtown convention style hotel and festival district.

On Thursday, city council members will discuss the proposals during executive session.

The name of the Abilene Civic Center is also back on city council's agenda.

Council members will consider renaming the Civic Center the Abilene Convention Center.

The matter was presented to council last month, but was tabled as council members wanted to know how much it would cost to change signage for the name change.

We checked out the city memo on the matter, and it shows the change will cost about $11,000 to make.

City council will vote on removing this item from the table at this week's meeting.

After that, this week's agenda shows they're set to 'Consider 380 Agreement for Public Utilities'.

That refers to Chapter 380 of Texas Government Code. It enables cities and counties to provide incentives that encourage development.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at Abilene City Hall.
