Lightning suspected cause of Runnels County wildfire

BALLINGER, Texas - Lightning is believed to have started a large wildfire east of Ballinger, the Texas A&M Forest Service says.

As of 7 a.m. Wednesday, the fire had burned 500 acres and was 65 percent contained. Crews have put a "dozer line" around the entire fire, said Phillip Truitt with the forest service.

The blaze is located about 11 miles east of Ballinger, north of Hwy 67 and east of County Road 137.

People as far away as Abilene reported smelling the smoke.

Shiloh Mullican, a spokesperson with the Texas A&M Forest Service, told KTXS the Ballinger Volunteer Fire Department notified them about the fire shortly before 5 p.m.

They were out there all night along with firefighters from Coleman, Winters, Glen Cove and Talpa.

No homes are threatened.
