ABILENE, Texas -

The McMurry Warhawks continued to show their bond on and off the field Saturday morning after the death of teammate Billy Cole III.

The running back was involved in a fatal car accident on Tuesday evening on I-20 near Putnam in Callahan County.

After Saturday's practice, the majority of the team took a bus to Cole's hometown of Sachse, where Cole was laid to rest.

"We have most of the team coming, so it just shows that Billy was loved by everybody, not just by his close friends," teammate Matt McHugh said.

McHugh and a few other friends also had another responsibility during the funeral.

"Actually, he has a couple of us -- we're the pallbearers," McHugh said. "It's an honor to be able to hold Billy."

Meanwhile, McHugh said the rest of the season will be played for Billy, who he said will be watching the game from a higher place.

"We're gonna play every game for him and play as hard as we can for Billy and I know my brothers will do the same," McHugh said.

Cole's funeral was held at First Baptist Church in Sachse.
