Monday marks National Pet Day. With that in mind, be sure to keep both your furry friend and your wallet happy with these tips to save money on pets from U.S. News & World Report:
Consider signing up for email newsletters and rewards programs from a few different pet stores so you can see where your preferred brands are on sale. Free shipping from several sites is also a big bonus.
Buy the right food at the right place
Don't hesitate to ask your vet for food recommendations. Just don't buy it from them. There's typically a big mark-up. Instead, consider buying in bulk and make sure you take advantage of sales, coupons and other deals.
Create a pet budget
Look at your monthly income and set a spending limit for items related to your pets. Don't forget to add in yearly costs like vet visits, shots and vaccinations.
Prepare for emergencies
You probably have an emergency fund for yourself. Why not for your pets, too? Another option to consider is pet insurance, an especially good idea for breeds more likely to inherit certain medical conditions.
Save on services
Use Yelp, Google or an app like Pet Care Services Finder to compare prices when looking to board your pet or find other services. Sites like DogVacay.com only list pet sitters who are trusted and insured.
Most of all, your pet just wants to spend time with and have fun with you. And that, of course, is priceless.
