ABILENE, Texas -

District 19 Congressional Representative Randy Neugebauer, who represents Abilene and much of the Big Country formally drew a challenger in the Republican primary.

Thursday, Dr. Donald May announced his candidacy at the Taylor County GOP headquarters in Abilene.

The Lubbock resident is a former Air Force Surgeon, veteran, farmer, and Texas Tech professor and dean. He's also been a long-time conservative voice in his native Lubbock, writing a blog and column for the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.

During the event, May never mentioned his opponent during the press conference.  Instead, May lashed out at democrats.

"We need courage in Washington" May said. "We have liberals who have moved far, far to the left, they're over there in the far left of communist land. The biggest war isn't in the Middle East, it's in Washington."

The republican and democratic primaries will be held on March 4.
