ABILENE, Texas -

The old Taylor County courthouse was evacuated around 3 p.m. Monday after a bomb threat was made to the probation office there.

Sgt. John Cummins, public information officer for the Taylor County Sheriff's Office, said everyone was asked to leave the property while bomb-sniffing dogs checked for a potential threat.

Deputies blocked off roads surrounding the old courthouse. That included Pecan Street, 3rd Street, 4th Street and Oak Street.

People were allowed back inside the building around 4 p.m. after no suspicious items were found.

According to Cummins, an unknown individual called the county’s adult probation office about 2:38 p.m. Monday and stated: “You get to be a hero today because there’s a bomb in the building.”

The employee who took the call, Cummins said, said the caller “sounded like a male in his mid-50s.”
