Hundreds take advantage of amnesty days at Abilene recycling center

Hundreds show up for recycling...

ABILENE, Texas - Hundreds of Abilene residents are taking advantage of the Spring Clean and Amnesty Days event at the Abilene Environmental Recycling Center on Oak Street.

But there’s still time to drop off items as the event continues until 5 p.m. Saturday.

"It gives you an opportunity to get rid of all that stuff that kind of collected over the years that you don't want anymore," said Abilene resident Marvin Martin.

This is a two-day event that happens twice a year. The recycling center is accepting many items including brush, tree limbs, plastic bottles, tires, old furniture and more.

"I'm dropping off an old barbeque pit I took apart," said resident David Smith.

"I'm dropping off a bunch of carpet pad and some scrap lumber," said resident Michael Freeman.

The purpose of this event is to keep Abilene's alleyways clean.

"A lot of times we can't get them all cleaned up … as soon as we'd like to. It just kind of helps people out if they want to bring it. We have the trucks available, the equipment available to unload it and get rid of it and get it out of the house, get it out of the alleys," said supervisor Ezequiel Herrera.

Herrera said the center had more than 1,000 people drop off items at the fall clean up event, and he expects to see around the same amount this spring.

There were a handful of workers and volunteers at the event to help out because of the amount of residents that stop by.

If you didn’t have time to take your items Friday, the event will start back up Saturday at 9 a.m.
