LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) -

Gov. Rick Perry has set Sept. 9 as the date for a special election to fill the Texas Senate seat of Republican Robert Duncan, who resigned to become chancellor of Texas Tech University.

Candidates interested in running for the District 28 seat must file applications with the Texas Secretary of State's Office by 5 p.m. Aug. 1.

Early voting is scheduled to begin Aug. 25.

The winner will serve the remainder of Duncan's term, which expires in 2017.

Duncan, a senator since 1996 after two terms in the House, began his duties as chancellor July 7.

He succeeded Kent Hance, who had been chancellor since 2006.
