Police: Woman stabbed husband for 'worshiping NASCAR'

Stephanie Hamman accused of driving car into church, stabbing husband at altar

CHURCH HILL, Tenn. - A Tennessee woman is accused of attempted first-degree murder after police say she tried to kill her husband with a kitchen knife after accusing him of 'worshiping' the NASCAR race at Bristol.

The husband told Church Hill police his wife, Stephanie Hamman, crashed her vehicle through the walls of Providence Church. He told officers when he went to check on his wife, he found her lying in front of the altar. As Steven checked on her, he says she stated, "The devil is in me," and stabbed him on the right side of his chest with a large kitchen knife.

The husband removed the knife and fled back to their apartment, where he called police.

Officers later located Stephanie Hamman at Holston Valley Medical. In a statement to police, she said, "God had told her that smoking marijuana all day and all night was not good for her, and that she only needed to smoke it at night to help her relax."

She then told officers that she felt her husband was worshiping the NASCAR race at Bristol, which made her mad, and she began having 'thoughts that the devil put in her head.'

Officers say she told them she drove through the doors because God wanted her inside, and the doors were locked.

According to the police report, Stephanie Hamman told officers, "After I drove through the doors, I put all the things I brought to the church at the altar. I called Steven and told him I had wrecked. I laid down in front of the altar until he got there. The devil told me to take the kitchen knife with me. I prayed I would not have to use it on him, but I did. When Steven came to check on me, I told him the devil was in me and I stabbed him in the heart. Have you heard if he is dead or not?"

Hamman's statement also read, "I smoke a bunch of weed. I love to smoke it. Sometimes when I do, I start seeing things that others don't. Isn't God good? He told me that this would happen, and just look, I am okay."

Hamman is charged with attempted first degree murder and felony vandalism.
