JONES COUNTY, Texas -

This week is National Correctional Officers Week and the Texas Department of Criminal Justice's John Middleton Unit honored fallen correctional officers around the nation in a ceremony Friday.

They rang a bell in honor of each officer who died in the line of duty in 2013.

“Every day is different. We come to work expecting good, we end up bad. Come to work expecting bad, it ends up good. It can be anything from a regular fight to just everybody's pleasant and happy all day,” said Darwin King, a training sergeant.

Family members who lost loved ones that worked at the facility were also recognized.

"It's just nice to have him honored and have all the officers honored because they do a fantastic job," said Carol Horton, whose husband worked at the Robertson Unit in Jones County.

Kenneth "Wayne" Horton was killed almost two years ago when his motorcycle collided with a car on highway 351. He worked at the prison for only six months as a chaplain, but he made a big impact on officers there.

"He loved people and God was number one and he wanted everybody to know him," Carol said.
