ABILENE, Texas -

The chance for a “ride-along” with Police Chief Stan Standridge has resulted in 120 new Abilene Police Department followers on Twitter.

Last week, Standridge invited Abilenians to follow the department on Twitter – @abilenepd – in return for the opportunity to ride with the chief.

A winner will be selected after APD reaches its goal of 1,500 new followers.

“Our goal is simple: to help raise awareness about our Twitter footprint and to help us communicate with a segment of our community that enjoys the indispensability of Twitter,” Abilene police spokesman George Spindler said in an email.

“We’re hoping that our community sees value in our ability to communicate directly with them about routine or vital public safety information via this social media channel.”

Only new followers who reside in or operate a business in Abilene are eligible to win, police officials have said. The winner will be required to sign a liability waiver and agree to all rules related to participation in a ride-along.

VIE FOR A RIDE WITH CHIEF STAN STANDRIDGE

ABILENE, TX – The Abilene Police Department (APD) is embarking on a contest to help raise awareness about its Twitter footprint. The desire is to draw Twitter followers to @abilenepd. After all, tweets from @abilenepd provide an immediate and direct source of community awareness information. That information can be routine or vital public safety information, especially during emergencies. Tweets from @abilenepd often include breaking news or awareness information about major crimes, officers at the scene of standoffs, fatalities, traffic alerts, news releases or other happenings that may warrant community engagement.

To incentivize this contest, Chief of Police Stan Standridge will provide a lucky contest participant a ride-along with him if they are selected the winner. Here are some specifics: Chief Standridge invites all Abilene residents, or individuals operating a business in Abilene, to consider following @abilenepd immediately. One lucky follower or representative (if the follower is a company) out of the next 1,500 followers, will have a chance to participate in a ride-along with Chief Standridge once the mark is reached. A lucky winner will be selected at random and must meet Department eligibility standards. Additionally, only new followers residing in, or operating a business in, Abilene city limits are eligible to win. The winner will be required to sign a liability waiver and agree to all rules related to participation in a ride-along.

Chief Standridge desires that our community stay engaged with their Department by following @abilenepd for the latest tweets regarding important or timely public safety information. Whether you know a little or a lot about police operations, the lucky winner will be provided some valuable insight on how their Department works to protect and serve the citizens of Abilene.

So, what are you waiting for? Start following APD via Twitter at @abilenepd and maybe you will be that lucky winner.
