Sparky Dean sworn in as Taylor County Justice of the Peace
It's official: There's a new Justice of the Peace for Taylor County.
Phillip "Sparky" Dean was sworn into office Monday at the Taylor County Courthouse.
The courtroom was packed as people showed up to watch the former Department of Public Safety trooper transition into his new role as JP.
"I've looked forward to this for quite a while," Dean said. "It's butterflies, excitement, and nervousness, all in one."
Dean retired from his long-time post with the DPS as their public information officer.
Dean said he's mot proud of his 30-year tenure with the department and the work he did with children at Abilene's Safety City.
"All the third-graders in 22 counties," Dean said. "Mr gracious! That is a trip!"
Dean said life will be a little different now without his signature trooper hat.
"When I'm not working, it's usually a ball cap when I'm at home," Dean said. "But I don't think a ball cap would be quite appropriate up here, but yeah, there will be some type of hat."
Dean took over the position from A.L. Deatherage, who retired in May.
