Superintendent: Student detained after terroristic threat in Hawley ISD

Hawley High School student in custody...

HAWLEY, Texas - A Hawley High School student has been taken into custody after allegedly making a terroristic threat against Hawley ISD.

"We were notified late last night about the possible situation involving one student and we started working on a plan last night into this morning," said Hawley Police Chief Brad Wilson. "It was just a situation [about] some comments being made. Whether they were being made in what context or anything, they were still taken seriously in light of everything's that's happening today around the country."

Hawley ISD Superintendent Jimmy Burns said the incident didn't happen on campus and the student had been detained. Once the suspect was taken into custody, Burns said he notified parents saying everyone was safe.

"The students and staff are always our primary concern here at Hawley and once authorities were contacted they notified me how they wanted to proceed and I agreed," Burns said.

Wilson said a terroristic threat involving any type of public building would be considered a third-degree felony.

We haven't been told what specific threat was made and we don't know who was arrested.  Though we know the suspect is a juvenile and it's our policy not to name juvenile suspects.

Wilson said since the investigation is ongoing, no further details can be released.
