Southern Texas transportation services are increasing the hourly wages of bus drivers to compete with booming oil and gas development.
The Corpus Christi Caller-Times reports school districts in Alice and Tuloso-Midway, as well as the Corpus Christi Regional Transportation Authority, have begun paying their bus drivers more so they don't leave for higher wages at the Eagle Ford Shale. According to its website, the starting wage for Eagle Ford Shale drivers is between $18 and $20 per hour, plus raises and bonuses.
The superintendent in Alice says her district recently implemented a $2 wage increase. A Tuloso-Midway official says his district raised drivers' pay from $11.50 to $16 per hour.
Spokeswoman Jane Haas said the entry level bus drivers in Corpus Christi are now paid between $14 and $16 an hour.
