Texas land surveyor gets prison in silencers case
(AP) - A land surveyor in West Texas has been sentenced to nearly three years in prison in an illegal weapons case involving silencers.
A federal judge in Midland sentenced 54-year-old Steven Leonard Prewit. The Midland man in August pleaded guilty to possession of eight unregistered silencers.
Prosecutors say Prewit, who was arrested last May, had fully automatic firearms, improvised explosive devices and silencers without required serial numbers. Officers who searched Prewit's home and a ranch near Balmorhea confiscated a number of weapons.
Prosecutors on Friday announced Prewit must serve 33 months in prison. He was also fined $10,000.
