The mayor of a South Texas border city, his younger brother and their father have been arrested in a public corruption investigation involving the city and schools.
A federal indictment returned in Houston and unsealed Wednesday names 35-year-old Progreso Mayor Omar Leonel Vela, 29-year-old Michael Vela and their father, 64-year-old Jose Guadalupe Vela Jr.
According to prosecutors, the Velas are charged with conspiracy, mail fraud, violations of the Travel Act, theft and bribery. They face court appearances Thursday in McAllen.
Jose Vela is maintenance and transportation supervisor for the Progreso Independent School District. Michael Vela chairs the school board.
The indictment said the Velas conspired to obtain bribes and kickbacks from service providers in Progresso, a city of about 5,500.
A city administrator and the superintendent of schools didn't immediately comment.
