EASTLAND, Texas - The city of Eastland is planning on enacting Stage 1 water restrictions, effective Aug. 18. It is the result of what officials say is the "steady recession" of Lake Leon.
Lake Leon is currently about six feet below capacity, leaving the reservoir about two-thirds full, city officials say. The lake has roughly seven feet to go before reaching its all-time low point that occurred during October 2011.
"It rained right the last two times we did this," Eastland Mayor Larry Vernon said in a news release. "If only we could rely on that happening each time, we would stay in a constant state of restrictions!
"But fortunately it doesn't happen that way in real life and we must reduce our water use."
According to Stage 1 restrictions, addresses ending in odd numbers may only water outside on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursday from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
In addition, addresses ending in even number my only water outside on Saturdays, Mondays and Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Eastland Independent School District will water on an even-number schedule for football fields and practice facilities.
"Everyone should have been watering all along using the odd/even schedule, so hopefully resetting sprinkler systems won't be too big of a problem," Eastland City Manager Ron Duncan said in the release.
"It is crucial that outside watering be done only during the four hours allotted per day. We learned a hard lesson in 2011. When we initially only imposed the odd/even watering schedule back then, water consumption actually increased."
The city of Carbon and the rural water supply corporations that receive water from the city of Eastland must follow Eastland's use restrictions.
According to the news release, there are a couple of exceptions to the city of Eastland's water use restrictions:
*- Newly planted landscapes can be given a three-week waiver by getting a permit from the city, and
*- Because Lakeside Golf Course is irrigated by effluent from Eastland's wastewater plant and from Lake Eastland, it is exempt from the watering restrictions.
