Texas survivor of 2-vehicle crash faces criminal charges

LOS FRESNOS, Texas - (AP) - Authorities say a South Texas woman who was the lone survivor of an auto collision that left five people dead now faces multiple criminal charges.
Margaret Gil of McAllen was driving near Los Fresnos on June 30 when her vehicle veered into oncoming traffic and crashed head-on into a car driven by 32-year-old Edward Gomez.
Gomez; his 3-year-old daughter, Kamilla Isabel Gomez; his 13-year-old niece, Julexy Alvares; and his 30-year-old wife, Erika Olaya Davila, were killed. Gil's passenger, 43-year-old Carmella Sanchez, also died.
Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Johnny Hernandez said Friday the 32-year-old Gil is being held without bond at the Cameron County jail and is charged with five counts of criminal negligent homicide.
Charges might be upgraded, depending on the results of toxicology tests performed on Gil.
