Two candidates campaign for Wylie board Place 1
Wylie Independent School District is getting a new board member in the school district's upcoming election.
Two candidates are running for Place 1. The election takes place on Saturday, May 11. Jason Conley works at Dyess Airforce Base as an Electrical and Environmental Backshop B1 Lead Technician. Conley said he believes in fiscal responsibility.
Alice Church is the General Manager of the Mall of Abilene. Church said she loves to serve her community. She currently serves on Wylie's Parent Teacher Organization.
There are two more seats on the board that will be filled. Terry Merck is the President and Darrell Moore is the Secretary. Both members are running for re-election uncontested.
Conley and Church both have children that attend Wylie ISD. They say security in schools is important to them. Conley is not opposed to guns in schools.
"I don't think it's a bad idea as long as the teachers are trained in a concealed handgun class," Conley said. "They go through a bystander training such as the police force does."
"My husband is a retired police officer, so I have a vested interest like any parent in making sure that my kids stay safe," Church said. That's something I think the board also needs to address at this point."
Church would rather see more armed resource officers at every campus. KTXS asked them what they bring to the table.
"I really think through issues before I make an opinion on them," Conley said. "I also work well with others. When you work in the military you tend to have to be able to sit down at the table and figure out a problem with many inputs not just one."
"I'm good at financials," Church said. "I'm good with public relations. You know just by culture of being at a mall, I think you're exposed to a lot of things that I think would be helpful in being on the board."
Church would be the only woman on the board currently if she were elected. Early voting ended Tuesday. People can vote on Saturday from 7am to 7pm.
