ABILENE, Texas -

A cigarette that wasn't extinguished properly caused a Tuesday morning house fire in the 1700 block of Jeanette Street, resulting in approximately $30,000 in damages, fire officials say.

Seven people were living in the house – which is being rented – at the time of the fire.

One person was taken to an Abilene hospital “for an illness unrelated to the fire,” the Abilene Fire Department said in a news release.

The call for help came in at 7:37 a.m.

“Upon arrival there was a heavy amount of smoke showing,” the fire department said in a news release. “Firefighters made an aggressive interior attack and were able to extinguish the fire quickly.”

The cause of the fire wasn't immediately known – and the blaze remains under investigation.

The Red Cross has reportedly responded to the scene.

Eight pieces of Abilene Fire Department equipment responded to the scene.

The blaze occurred across the street from the former Jefferson Middle School.
