ABILENE, Texas -

The price of school lunches is going up about 10 percent next year for Abilene Independent School District students.

AISD trustees voted Monday night to raise the price of an elementary school lunch from $1.80 to $2. The price of a lunch for middle and high school students is going up 20 cents as well – from $2.30 to $2.50 starting in August.

The price increases are only for those students who must pay full price. For the 68 percent of AISD students who qualify for some form of assistance, there is no increase.

The Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 required the school district to raise the rates this year. It also requires the price hike for all districts with average prices below $2.65 per student.
