A Beaumont police officer has escaped serious injury after he was dragged briefly while unsuccessfully trying to prevent a woman from driving off in a patrol car.

Authorities said officers had responded to a domestic disturbance call Friday afternoon when a 21-year-old woman put her hand through a partially open window of a patrol car at the scene, unlocked the door and took off.

The officer was dragged when he tried to stop her.

Police said the woman, described as under medication for a mental illness, wrecked the car a few minutes later. She wasn't seriously hurt but was taken to a hospital.
